Run to the Sun

Saturday, March 14, 2009 was Maui's annual Ultra-marathon: The Run to the Sun. 36 miles, sea level to 10,000 feet! It is a crazy endeavor for anyone, but put together a team of crazy people and it becomes an uphill 7 hour party!!! Troy and I got invited to run by Rachelle Kirton, native of Page, AZ, super in shape 40 something woman. We were game, then Troy injured his knee over training so we sent out the search for another crazy person. Phil Mcgain, native of Sydney, Australia, pro windsurfer, super dedicated athlete was enthusiastic to be the MAN! The race started at 4:30am and Rachelle took the first two legs, Phil followed for the third, then I got to jump out and take the 4th. Phil took the fifth and then I closed out with the 6th and final leg. Our support car driver, Bill Kirton was great making sure we were warm, fed, hydrated, happy and motivated. the cow bell was heard the whole way up Haleakala! We had sun, great views, sideways rain, wind that either pushed or pulled, 45 degree weather and thin air, but overall it was a memorable day and our team took 3rd place for the mixed teams-SWEET! Do it again next year? Maybe. Maybe once is enough.
